The largest grizzly ever recorded in the state weighed 2,200 pounds; it was killed in Valley Center, California, in 1866. Its size made such an impression that Catherine Lovett Smith, whose ranch the bear had been found on when she was only six years old, remembered the incident in an oral history to the new owner of the ranch decades later in 1932, at the age of 72.
Grizzly Bear Evolution. The evolution process of the Grizzly Bear is still relatively unknown. They are believed to have travelled to North America approximately 50,000 years ago. They are subspecies of the Brown Bear and it is believed that due to environmental changes the Grizzly Bear ended up in the higher parts of North America.
The grizzly bear is a very large animal, often tipping the scales at well over 1300 pounds.Females are typically about 20% to 30% smaller than males, and both males and females will be considerably lighter in the spring, when they emerge from their 4 to 6 month long dormancy.
One last reason grizzly bear reintroduction would be beneficial is that these bears can be used as a keystone species in their environments 8. Grizzly bears are omnivores and therefore eat plants and other animals. Since their food range is so large the presence of the bears impacts the entire trophic cascade.
